Once known as Bay City when it was incorporated in 1915, it renamed itself to Seal Beach soon after. It became a popular place for rumrunner during Prohibition due to the many inlets and small police force.  It also became famous for gambling during this time. Most the gambling ended after a state crack down in the early 1940s.

The Navy purchased a significant portion of the land during World War II, leading to a growth in population in the area. BY the time the war end most the amusement area was gone along with the gambling.  The beach and surfer vibe took over in the 1960s and the city grew through development of new subdivisions and annexation of Surfside in 1968.

Annual events in Seal Beach consist of summer concert series at the pier, a health expo, and a classic car show. The city also makes holidays special with decorations for Easter, 4th of July fireworks in partnership with Los Alamitos, and Christmas tree lighting.
